New gTLD Application Filed for .lan Domain
Original: New gTLD Application for .lan
A new application for the .lan generic top-level domain has been submitted to ICANN's New gTLD Program. The .lan string has long been used informally for local area networks on home and corporate networks, so its potential delegation as a public top-level domain raises questions about conflicts with existing internal network setups and naming conventions.
Why now: Tech communities are discussing the technical risks of delegating a domain string widely used for internal LANs.
