EU to phase out lead gunshot ammunition
Original: Lead gunshot to be phased out across the European Union
The European Union has agreed to phase out lead gunshot, a move affecting hunters and shooters across the bloc. Animal welfare groups such as Eurogroup for Animals have welcomed the decision, pointing to lead poisoning of wildlife, including waterbirds that ingest spent pellets, and risks to human health from contaminated game meat. The change is part of wider EU efforts to restrict toxic substances under chemicals regulations.
Why now: A new EU regulatory decision restricting lead ammunition has just been announced, drawing attention from hunting, health and animal welfare communities.
