Lead gunshot to be phased out across the European Union
The European Union is set to phase out the use of lead gunshot, following a push by animal welfare and environmental groups who argue that toxic lead ammunition poisons wildlife, particularly waterbirds that ingest spent shot, and contaminates food chains. Animal welfare organisation Eurogroup for Animals welcomed the move. Similar restrictions have already been adopted in several EU member states and in other countries.
Why now: The EU decision on lead ammunition is a significant environmental and animal welfare policy change being actively promoted by campaign groups.
