NATO is going ahead with its annual Steadfast Noon exercise, which rehearses the alliance's nuclear deterrent involving aircraft capable of carrying nuclear weapons, despite warnings from Russia over nuclear rhetoric and escalation. The decision underscores the alliance's resolve to maintain readiness and unity as tensions with Moscow remain high over the war in Ukraine, with officials stressing the drill is routine and defensive.
Why now: Ongoing war in Ukraine and Russian nuclear threats make any nuclear-related military exercise highly sensitive.
