NATO is going ahead with its annual Steadfast Noon exercise, which rehearses the alliance's nuclear deterrent involving fighter jets capable of carrying nuclear weapons. The decision follows warnings from Russia amid heightened tensions over the war in Ukraine. NATO officials say the long-planned drill is routine and a necessary signal of the alliance's readiness, while critics and observers warn of rising nuclear rhetoric between the two sides.
Why now: The drill is taking place at a moment of escalated Russian nuclear threats, making its timing highly sensitive.
