UN urges accelerated climate action ahead of COP31
Original: ‘Overshoot is not a reason to surrender’: UN calls for accelerated climate action ahead of COP31 summit
The United Nations has issued a call for faster climate action ahead of the COP31 summit, with the message that 'overshoot is not a reason to surrender'. The statement pushes back against fatalism about breaching warming limits, urging governments to intensify emissions cuts and adaptation efforts rather than treating overshoot as an excuse for inaction ahead of the negotiations.
Why now: Attention is building ahead of the COP31 climate summit, and the UN's rallying message frames the debate over whether breaching temperature limits undermines climate goals.
