UN urges accelerated climate action despite 1.5C overshoot
Original: ‘Overshoot is not a reason to surrender’: UN calls for accelerated climate action ahead of COP31 summit
The United Nations says exceeding the 1.5C warming limit temporarily is not grounds for giving up, urging governments to accelerate emissions cuts ahead of the COP31 climate summit. Officials stress that every fraction of a degree avoided reduces harm, and that overshoot makes stronger action more urgent, not less. The message is aimed at countries weakening their climate commitments.
Why now: Fresh UN messaging ahead of COP31 is pushing back against fatalism over the 1.5C target being breached.
