Original: nidal hasan

The US Army has set a date for its first military execution by firing squad since 1945, according to the New York Times. The announcement has renewed attention on Nidal Hasan, the former Army major behind the 2009 Fort Hood shooting, who sits on death row. The move puts the military death penalty back in the spotlight after decades without an execution by firing squad.

Why now: The Army's announcement of its first firing squad execution since 1945 has revived public interest in death row military cases, including Nidal Hasan's.
