Americans back nuclear-powered submarines but not nuclear weapons for South Korea
Original: Nuclear-powered, not nuclear-armed: What Americans want for South Korea
A new survey highlighted by Korea JoongAng Daily finds American public opinion favors nuclear-powered capabilities for South Korea, such as nuclear-powered submarines, while stopping short of supporting an independent South Korean nuclear arsenal. The findings land amid ongoing debate in Seoul about extended deterrence and whether the US alliance is enough against North Korea's growing missile and nuclear program.
Why now: Renewed debate over South Korea potentially arming itself or acquiring nuclear-powered assets as North Korea's threats grow.
