Americans back nuclear-powered South Korea, not nuclear-armed
Original: Nuclear-powered, not nuclear-armed: What Americans want for South Korea
A new survey covered by Korea JoongAng Daily indicates that Americans support South Korea acquiring nuclear-powered capabilities, such as submarines, but stop short of backing a nuclear arsenal for Seoul. The findings land amid ongoing debate in South Korea over whether the country should develop its own nuclear weapons in response to North Korea's growing missile and nuclear programs.
Why now: Debate is intensifying in South Korea over independent nuclear armament and US extended deterrence, making American public opinion newly relevant.
