Everyday volunteers keep critical digital infrastructure running
Original: Meet the handful of everyday people keeping digital infrastructure alive just like the XKCD "Dependency" cartoon https:/
A new data visualisation project highlights the small group of largely unheralded individuals who maintain essential software and systems the internet quietly depends on. The project draws a direct comparison to XKCD's famous "Dependency" cartoon, which jokes that modern digital life rests on a single unsupported package maintained by one person in Nebraska. Readers are sharing it as a reminder of how fragile online infrastructure really is.
Why now: The XKCD Dependency cartoon is a widely shared touchstone, and the project gives it a fresh real-world angle that resonates online.
