A highway near Joshua Tree National Park is repeatedly killing wildlife as animals cross in search of food and water. Conservationists have enlisted specially trained detection dogs that locate animal scat along the roadside, allowing researchers to identify which species are being hit and study their movements. The findings are expected to guide mitigation measures such as fencing or wildlife crossings to reduce roadkill in the area.

Why now: The unusual use of scat-detecting dogs to address ongoing wildlife roadkill near Joshua Tree is drawing attention to a growing road ecology problem.
