Dogs trained to sniff droppings track wildlife deaths on Joshua Tree highway
Original: This Joshua Tree highway keeps killing wildlife. Enter the poop-hunting dogs
A highway near Joshua Tree National Park is repeatedly killing wildlife as animals try to cross, and researchers are now using dogs trained to detect animal droppings to map which species are being hit. The technique, known as scat detection, helps biologists identify roadkill hotspots and assess populations without直接 sightings, informing possible fixes such as wildlife crossings along the route.
Why now: The unusual use of scat-sniffing dogs to address rising roadkill on a highway near a beloved national park is drawing attention.
