Trump administration opposes all candidates for next UN chief
Original: Trump administration opposes all options for new UN chief — and wants new candidates
The Trump administration has signalled opposition to every candidate currently in the running to become the next United Nations Secretary-General, and is pushing for new contenders to enter the race. The position adds turbulence to the selection process to succeed António Guterres, whose term ends at the end of 2026, and has drawn attention to Washington's influence over the appointment.
Why now: The United States is openly reshaping the contest for the UN's top job, raising uncertainty over who can win the position.
