Whooping Cranes Learned to Migrate Following Costumed Pilots
Original: Whooping Cranes Learned to Migrate by Following Costumed Pilots
Conservationists taught captive-reared whooping cranes to migrate by having pilots in ultralight aircraft, dressed in crane costumes, lead the birds along historic migratory routes. The technique, used by Operation Migration, helped re-establish wild migratory populations in eastern North America and remains a famous example of creative wildlife reintroduction efforts.
Why now: The remarkable story of humans in costumes teaching endangered birds an instinctive behavior continues to draw wide attention and admiration.
