Whooping Cranes Learned to Migrate Following Costumed Pilots
Original: Whooping Cranes Learned to Migrate by Following Costumed Pilots
Conservationists taught captive-raised whooping cranes their ancient migration routes by having pilots in crane costumes lead the birds along the route in ultralight aircraft. The disguise prevented the chicks from imprinting on humans, allowing them to learn the journey from humans dressed as cranes. The story is drawing attention as a striking example of unconventional wildlife conservation that helped bring the endangered species back from the brink.
Why now: People are sharing a remarkable and little-known conservation technique that saved an endangered species.
