YouTuber builds police-tracking camera, gets police visit
Original: YouTuber builds 'Flock-like' camera to track police vehicles, gets police visit
A Canadian YouTuber built an automatic license plate reader camera designed to track police vehicles, mirroring the technology used by surveillance firm Flock Safety. After the project drew attention, officers visited his home to raise privacy concerns about the system. The episode has sparked debate about surveillance asymmetry, with critics asking why mass plate tracking of citizens is acceptable but tracking of police is treated as a problem.
Why now: The irony of police raising privacy concerns over being surveilled by the same technology they or contractors use on the public is drawing wide attention.
