Google ordered to halt datacentre work in Finland
Original: Google told to halt work on datacentres in Finland over environmental concerns
Finnish authorities have told Google to temporarily stop work on its datacentre projects in the country pending a fuller assessment of their environmental impact. The order comes as resistance grows across Europe to the water, land and energy demands of large datacentre campuses, and the story is drawing wide attention among technology and environmental readers.
Why now: Concerns over the environmental footprint of big tech's datacentre expansion are a live debate, and a regulator actually stopping Google's work is unusual.
