Ministers plan to cut heat pump subsidies to boost defence spending
Original: Ministers preparing to slash heat pump subsidies to fund defence spending
Government ministers are preparing to slash subsidies for heat pumps, with the savings redirected toward increased defence spending. The move would hit a flagship green heating scheme just as households are being encouraged to switch away from gas boilers. Environmental groups are expected to criticise the plan, arguing climate commitments are being sacrificed to meet military budget pressures.
Why now: Reports that green heating funds may be diverted to defence have sparked debate over balancing climate policy with security priorities.
