UK ministers plan cuts to heat pump subsidies to fund defence
Original: Ministers preparing to slash heat pump subsidies to fund defence spending
UK government ministers are preparing to cut heat pump subsidies, diverting around £2bn from the energy budget towards defence spending. Sources say part of the savings is expected to come from the boiler upgrade scheme, which helps households switch from gas boilers to low-carbon heat pumps. The reported move has raised concerns that the shift could undermine the UK's home heating decarbonisation efforts at a time when uptake of the technology remains below targets.
Why now: An exclusive report reveals a conflict between climate policy commitments and rising defence spending priorities.
