UK ministers plan to cut heat pump subsidies to fund defence
Original: Ministers preparing to slash heat pump subsidies to fund defence spending
UK government ministers are preparing to cut around £2bn from the energy budget, with part of the savings expected to come from the boiler upgrade scheme that subsidises heat pump installations. According to sources cited by the Guardian, the money would be redirected toward defence spending, raising concerns about the future of home decarbonisation policy.
Why now: The reported trade-off between climate subsidies and defence funding is controversial amid rising European defence budgets.
