UK PM says Russia 'clearly' interfered in Brexit vote
Original: PM says it is 'clear' Russia interfered with Brexit vote
The UK Prime Minister has said it is 'clear' that Russia interfered in the 2016 Brexit referendum, pointing to Russian-backed online efforts to influence British voters. The statement reignites debate over the full findings of the intelligence committee's Russia report and whether successive governments downplayed the scale of Moscow's meddling in British politics.
Why now: The Prime Minister's explicit and stronger-than-usual wording on Russian interference breaks with previous government caution, prompting renewed political debate.
