South Korean broadcasters and commentators are debating a slogan demanding the country act as 'an independent nation' and 'reject servile diplomacy.' The phrase points to a rift over how Seoul balances its alliance with the United States and engagement with China or North Korea, with critics and supporters arguing over whether current foreign policy undermines South Korean sovereignty.
Why now: Ongoing controversy over South Korea's foreign policy alignment has made questions of national independence and diplomacy a hot topic.
