Society of Authors signs AI charter
The UK Society of Authors has signed a charter on the use of artificial intelligence in publishing and the creative industries. The charter commits signatories to principles such as transparency about how AI systems are trained on creative work, fair remuneration for writers whose material is used, and human control over creative output. It follows months of debate among authors about unlicensed use of their books to train AI models, with many writers' groups pressing publishers and tech firms for stronger protections.
Why now: Writers and publishers are actively debating how AI should be allowed to use creative work, so any formal commitment from a major authors' body draws attention.
