Society of Authors signs AI charter
The Society of Authors, the UK union representing writers, has signed a charter on artificial intelligence. The move signals the organisation's formal position on how AI should be used in publishing and creative work, amid ongoing concern among authors over the use of their books to train AI models without consent or payment. Writers' groups worldwide have been pushing for stronger protections.
Why now: Authors are increasingly anxious about AI's impact on their livelihoods and copyright, so the union's formal stance draws attention.
