Alberta votes on leaving Canada amid separatist push

Original: alberta

Albertans are voting on whether the province should begin exploring separation from Canada, in a referendum driven by separatist sentiment in the oil-rich western province. A Reuters report notes the measure is expected to be defeated, but argues the separatist movement itself is likely to endure beyond the result. The vote has drawn attention across Canada and internationally, with debate over western alienation and Alberta's relationship with Ottawa.

Why now: Alberta is holding a referendum on separation from Canada, a rare and constitutionally contentious move.
