Rubio says the war is about Donetsk
Original: Rubio says war about Donetsk
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the war in Ukraine is fundamentally about Donetsk, drawing attention to the eastern Ukrainian region at the centre of Russia's 2014 intervention and the current conflict. The remark is fuelling debate over whether Washington sees the war as a broader territorial dispute and what it implies for peace negotiations and possible territorial concessions.
Why now: Rubio's framing suggests US peace efforts may centre on territorial questions in eastern Ukraine, touching a sensitive issue in ongoing talks.
