Thousands of California state workers strike in contract dispute with Newsom
Original: Thousands of California state workers walk off the job in contract dispute with Newsom
Thousands of California state employees walked off the job amid a contract standoff with Governor Gavin Newsom's administration. The stoppage highlights stalled negotiations over pay and working conditions for state government workers. The walkout disrupts public services and escalates a labor dispute that could pressure the governor's office to return to the bargaining table with unions representing the workforce.
Why now: A large-scale public-sector strike directly challenging Governor Newsom is a major labor and political story.
