Haiti Gangs Ambush UN-backed Force, Four Salvadoran Troops Missing

Original: Haiti Gangs Ambush UN-backed Security Force, Four Salvadoran Troops Missing | VERTEX

Gangs in Haiti have ambushed the UN-backed multinational security mission, leaving four Salvadoran troops missing. The mission, led largely by Salvadoran and Kenyan personnel, has been deployed to help Haitian police combat powerful armed groups controlling much of the capital, Port-au-Prince. The incident underlines the dangers facing the force, which has struggled with limited resources against increasingly bold gangs, and is drawing international attention to the mission's future.

Why now: The reported disappearance of Salvadoran troops after a gang ambush marks a serious escalation for the UN-backed mission in Haiti.
