GitHub replaces Identicons with generic avatars for new profiles
Original: GitHub now uses a generic avatar instead of "Identicons" for new profiles
GitHub has stopped generating its distinctive patterned Identicon avatars for new user profiles, assigning a plain generic default image instead. The change is drawing criticism from longtime users who saw the geometric five-by-five patterns as a recognizable part of the platform's identity, with many arguing the new look is bland and that user choice or an opt-out should have been preserved.
Why now: Users are reacting to the quiet removal of a beloved, long-standing visual feature of the platform.
