GitHub replaces classic Identicons with generic avatars for new users
Original: GitHub now uses a generic avatar instead of "Identicons" for new profiles
GitHub has stopped generating its distinctive Identicon avatars for new profiles, instead assigning a generic default image. Identicons, the geometric pattern-based avatars introduced in 2013, became a recognizable part of GitHub's visual identity. Longtime users are reacting to the change, with some expressing nostalgia for the familiar patterns and others debating why the swap was made.
Why now: Developers are nostalgic and opinionated about GitHub quietly retiring a beloved visual signature for new accounts.
