Ian McKellen to appear in 'mixed reality' play without being there

Sir Ian McKellen will star in the UK premiere of the 'mixed reality' play 'An Ark' in Manchester, but will not appear in person. His presence will be delivered through technology, blending live and digital performance. The production is drawing attention for testing how far theatre can go with mixed reality, and for putting one of Britain's best-known actors at the centre of that experiment.
Why now: A major star headlining a play via mixed reality rather than appearing live is an unusual development in theatre and technology.
