Ian McKellen to appear in 'mixed reality' play without being there
Original: Ian McKellen to star in UK premiere of 'mixed reality' play - but not in person https://www.theguardian.com/stage/2026/o
Ian McKellen is to star in the UK premiere of the 'mixed reality' play 'An Ark' in Manchester, but will not appear in person. His performance will instead be delivered through mixed reality technology, blending live staging with digital presence. The production is drawing attention for combining a major stage name with emerging theatrical technology, raising questions about what live performance means.
Why now: A beloved veteran actor starring in a cutting-edge mixed reality production, without physically attending, is a novel and surprising development in theatre.
