Scientists Discover Ancient Rainforest Frozen Under Antarctica
Original: Scientists Found a Rainforest Frozen Under Antarctica
Scientists have found evidence of an ancient rainforest preserved beneath the ice of Antarctica, revealing that the now-frozen continent once supported a warm, forested ecosystem. Sediment cores containing fossilised roots, pollen and soil point to a temperate environment dating back tens of millions of years. The discovery is drawing wide attention online, with many fascinated by the idea of a lush landscape hidden under kilometres of ice.
Why now: The striking contrast between Antarctica's frozen present and its rainforest past makes the discovery highly shareable science news.
