Cats on vegan diets show unexpected weight advantage

A new report suggests cats fed vegan diets may show an unexpected weight advantage compared with those on conventional meat-based diets. The finding is drawing attention from animal welfare advocates and pet owners, though it is likely to fuel debate, since cats are obligate carnivores and many veterinarians caution that plant-based feeding must be carefully managed to avoid nutritional deficiencies.
Why now: The finding challenges the assumption that cats need meat-based diets, touching a nerve in ongoing debates over pet nutrition and veganism.
