Original: U.S. military says 5 were killed by a strike on an alleged drug smuggling boat in the eastern Pacific

The U.S. military says five people were killed in a strike on a boat it alleges was involved in drug smuggling in the eastern Pacific. The strike is part of the ongoing U.S. campaign against trafficking vessels in the region, which has drawn scrutiny over the legal basis for using lethal military force against suspected smugglers rather than arresting them.

Why now: The strike raises fresh questions about the legality of U.S. military lethal action against alleged drug traffickers.
