US strike on alleged drug boat in Pacific kills five
Original: U.S. military says 5 were killed by a strike on an alleged drug smuggling boat in the eastern Pacific
The U.S. military says five people were killed in a strike on a boat it says was involved in drug smuggling in the eastern Pacific. The strike is part of the Trump administration's expanding counter-narcotics military campaign, which has previously targeted vessels in the Caribbean. Officials have not released the identities or nationalities of those killed, and the operation is drawing scrutiny over the legal basis for using lethal force against suspected traffickers.
Why now: The strike extends the U.S. military's lethal counter-narcotics campaign into the eastern Pacific and raises fresh questions about its legality.
