Waterloo Region election held, regional chair appointment still pending

Waterloo Region voters went to the polls in Ontario's municipal election, but the region's top job remains unresolved: the regional chair will be appointed rather than elected, with the provincial appointee expected to take the seat only in December or January. Local commentators are mocking the process, joking that councils could stage a dramatic moment when the appointed chair first walks in, and questioning what the delay means for local democracy.

Why now: The elected councils are settling in while the key regional chair role sits with a pending provincial appointment, renewing criticism of appointed rather than elected leadership.
