Waterloo Region elects councils, but regional chair still appointed

Municipal elections have taken place across Waterloo Region, but the regional chair will not be chosen by voters. Instead, the position remains a provincial appointment, with the appointee expected to join council only in December or January. Local commentators are criticizing the arrangement, with some suggesting councillors could make the appointee's arrival awkward as a protest against the lack of direct election for the role.

Why now: Residents are frustrated that a key regional leadership role remains provincially appointed rather than elected despite the municipal vote.
