Akai unveils MPC Sample Key with open firmware

Original: Akai MPC Sample Key: 37 Keys, Open Firmware [2026]

Akai Professional is preparing a new instrument called the MPC Sample Key, expected in 2026, featuring a 37-key layout and open firmware. The open-source approach marks a notable shift for the MPC line, long known as a closed sampling and production platform, and could allow musicians and developers to modify or extend the device's software themselves.

Why now: The promise of open firmware on an iconic MPC product is a significant and unusual move for the music production community.
