Akai MPC Sample Key offers 37 keys and open firmware

Original: Akai MPC Sample Key: 37 Keys, Open Firmware [2026]

Akai is producing an MPC Sample Key, a compact sampler-style instrument with 37 keys and open firmware, slated for 2026. The open-firmware approach is drawing attention from the music production community, as it would let users modify and extend the device's software, echoing the hackable ethos of classic samplers while updating it for a modern hardware product.

Why now: Open firmware on a mainstream music hardware product is unusual and appeals to producers and tinkerers.
