Glycon: the snake god with a human face
Original: the snake with a mans face: glycon, alexander and the man who tried to kill a god with a book Somewhere around the 150s
Around 150 AD, a man named Alexander founded a new god at Abonoteichus on the Black Sea coast of Paphlagonia, in what is now northern Turkey. The deity, Glycon, was a snake with a human face, and its oracle drew worshippers across the Roman world. The satirist Lucian later tried to destroy the cult with a book exposing its tricks.
Why now: People are discussing the strange ancient story of a fake god and Lucian's attempt to debunk it with writing.
