UN ready to keep backing Western Sahara peace as MINURSO ends
Original: Western Sahara: UN ‘stands ready’ to keep supporting peace efforts as MINURSO mission ends
The United Nations says it 'stands ready' to continue supporting peace efforts in Western Sahara as the MINURSO peacekeeping mission winds down. The mission, deployed to monitor a ceasefire between Morocco and the Polisario Front, had been one of the UN's longest-running operations. Officials stressed that UN commitment to a negotiated settlement in the disputed territory remains unchanged despite the mission's closure.
Why now: The closure of a long-standing UN peacekeeping mission in a contested territory raises questions about the future of the peace process there.
