UN pledges continued support as MINURSO Western Sahara mission ends
Original: Western Sahara: UN ‘stands ready’ to keep supporting peace efforts as MINURSO mission ends
The United Nations says it 'stands ready' to keep supporting peace efforts in Western Sahara as the MINURSO peacekeeping mission draws to a close. Observers are watching closely what the wind-down means for stability in the region and the long-stalled prospects for a negotiated settlement.
Why now: The closure of a long-running UN peacekeeping mission in a disputed territory raises questions about the future of the peace process there.
