The United Nations says it 'stands ready' to keep supporting peace efforts in Western Sahara following the end of the MINURSO peacekeeping mission. The UN reiterated its commitment to a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution that provides for self-determination for the people of Western Sahara. The closure of the long-running mission marks a significant shift in how the international community handles the decades-old dispute over the territory.
Why now: The winding up of MINURSO, a long-standing peacekeeping presence, is a notable development in a frozen conflict that has drawn renewed attention.
