One hundred years ago, the German silent film 'Überflüssige Menschen' had its premiere in Berlin. The anniversary is being discussed alongside the question of what kind of character portrait the film drew, with a reference article on the concept of 'Charakterzeichnung' — character depiction — offering possible answers. The film, directed by Béla Balázs, is remembered as a notable work of Weimar-era cinema exploring the lives of supposedly 'superfluous' young people.
Why now: The centenary of the film's Berlin premiere prompted a look back at its characters and their meaning.
