OpenVDDK emerges as free VMware VDDK alternative
Original: OpenVDDK: $0 VMware VDDK Alternative [2026]
OpenVDDK is being presented as a no-cost, open replacement for VMware's VDDK, the SDK used for virtual disk data protection and backup integration. The timing points to ongoing interest in VMware alternatives and licensing costs following Broadcom's acquisition of VMware, as IT teams look to cut dependencies on paid tooling in 2026.
Why now: Rising VMware licensing costs under Broadcom are driving demand for free alternatives to its SDKs.
