Safari Reader Can Reveal Articles Behind Soft Paywalls
Original: Safari Reader Can Show Article Text Before Soft Paywall Overlays Appear
Apple's Safari Reader mode can display the full text of some news articles before soft paywall overlays appear on the page. The feature, designed to strip ads and clutter, apparently loads the underlying article content that publishers intend to lock behind subscription prompts. The observation is circulating among tech outlets and raises questions about how effectively publishers can enforce paywalls in Safari.
Why now: It highlights a possible weakness in soft paywalls that affects publishers' subscription revenue.
