Safari Reader Can Bypass Soft Paywalls, Users Note
Original: Safari Reader Can Show Article Text Before Soft Paywall Overlays Appear
Apple's Safari Reader mode can display the full text of some news articles before the site's soft paywall overlay loads, letting readers access content intended to be gated. The observation highlights a gap between paywall scripts and Reader's stripped-down rendering of page content. Publishers relying on client-side paywall checks are most exposed, and the news is prompting discussion about whether Apple will adjust Reader behavior or publishers will move gating server-side.
Why now: People find it notable that a mainstream browser feature can expose paywalled article text, raising publisher revenue concerns.
