Hegseth proposes contest to pick next US military base
Original: Hegseth calls for contest to decide America's next military base
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has called for a competition to determine the location of America's next military base. The proposal, reported by Axios, has drawn attention as an unusual approach to defense infrastructure planning, with the selection typically handled through internal Pentagon assessments rather than an open contest.
Why now: The defense secretary's unconventional call for a public competition over a major basing decision is newsworthy defense policy news.
